A new birdI think I’ve already mentioned that as much as I love to watch birds, that activity is decidedly minor here in Colombia. And I’ve mentioned that I’m not much of a bird photographer. But yesterday, as I was leaving my room in the Casa de Encuentros after lunch, I heard a new sound and there, in one of the borojó trees right in front of me, was a small mixed group—five birds: an Empidonax flycatcher (Empidonax sp—trailli?), hard to identify here since they don’t sing much in this area, but this little bird had migrated from eastern North America; two Banaquit (Coereba flaveola), residents in this area, a very pretty little bird; and two individuals of a new bird for me, Golden-Hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata), a beautiful little bird that shows a lot of electric blue in flight.
Well, I grabbed a camera and took a few quick pictures—the pictures aren’t anything special, but since the birds are, I thought I’d share them anyway.
Un pájaro nuevoCreo que ya he mencionado que, por mucho que me encante observar pájaros, acá en Colombia, esa actividad es muy secundaria. Y que he mencionado que no soy muy bueno como fotógrafo de los pájaros. Pero ayer, al salir de mi cuarto en la Casa de Encuentros después del almuerzo, escuché una vocalización nueva y allí, en uno de los palos de borojó ante mi, hubo un pequeño grupo mixto—cinco pájaros: un atrapamoscas del género Empidonax (Empidonax sp—trailli?), difícil de identificar acá porque cantan muy poco en esta área, pero este pájaro pequeño había migrado del oriente de América del Norte; dos “Bananaquit” (Coereba flaveola) (lo siento, no sé sus nombres comunes en español), residentes acá; y dos individuos de un pájaro nuevo para mi, “Golden-Hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata), un pajarito hermoso que al volar muestra mucho azul eléctrico.
