I’ll have more to write about Christmas soon. But for the moment, just a light bit of trivia.
Beth, the light of my life, came to spend two weeks with me in Colombia, and see where I work here and meet my friends/colleagues. She got a quick look at Bogotá, Quibdó, the River Atrato and Medellín.
In Medellín, we went to see the famous display of lights along the Medellín River (Medellín is well-known for the Christmas light displays, that this year used 15.5 million bulbs!) along with bunches of other tourists and visitors—all the rest seemed to be Colombians. (For now I’ll leave to one side the criticism I heard from a friend that this is a tremendous waste of money that should be used to bring electricity to some of the towns that don’t yet have it.)
One of the displays is a series of perhaps 30 expressions that mean “Merry Christmas” in various languages. They’re big—maybe five feet high and eighteen feet long. And they spell out “Merry Christmas” in Arabic, Polish, Dutch, Cantonese, and numerous other languages. Underneath, there’s a small legend that says (in Spanish), “Merry Christmas in Russian,” or whatever the language happens to be. Here, without further comment, is a picture of our favorite.
Here, most people don’t say “Happy New Year,” but rather “Happy Year!’ I like that, so:

Una nota rápida navideña—una muestra favorita
Tendré más que escribir sobre la navidad dentro de poco. Pero por el momento, solo un punto trivial y ligero.
Beth, la luz de mi vida, llegó a pasar quince días conmigo en Colombia, a ver donde trabajo y conocer mis amig@s/colegas acá. Logró echar un vistazo rápido a Bogotá, Quibdo, el río Atrato y Medellín.
En Medellín, fuimos a ver el famoso alumbrado navideño por el río Medellín (Medellín es muy conocida por sus alumbrados navideños, que este año ¡ocuparon 15,5 millones de bombillas!) juntos con grupos de otros turistas y visitantes—los demás parecían ser tod@s Colombian@s. (Por el momento, dejo a un lado la crítica que escuchamos de parte de una amiga que esto es un derroche tremendo de plata que debe ocuparse para llevar luz a unos de los pueblos que todavía no la tienen).
Una de las muestras es un serie de quizás 30 expresiones que quieren decir “Feliz Navidad” en distintos idiomas. Son grandes—quizás casi dos metros altas por seis metros largas. Y deletrean “Feliz Navidad” en árabe, polaco, holandés, cantonés y otros muchos idiomas. Debajo, hay una leyenda pequeña que dice (en castellano) “Feliz Navidad en ruso,” o cualquier idioma que sea. Acá, sin más comentario, es una foto de nuestra favorita.
Acá, la mayoría de la gente no dice “Feliz Año Nuevo,” sino “Feliz Año.” Me gusta eso, entonces:
