Cuando salí de Colombia al final de mi última visita, en principios de enero, dije que el blog iba a seguir. Unos asuntos desafortunados personales lo hizo difícil por un tiempo, pero ahora, al alistarme por otra visita a Colombia, es hora de resucitarlo.
An Interactive Traveling Photo Exhibit about El Chocó (a proposal)
I thought you might be interested in a photo project I’ve been developing, consulting with some Colombian colleagues, about El Chocó. The idea is to create a set of panels of images with a little text about the area’s wonderful natural environment, the special cultures there nurtured by that environment, the threats to both, and the resistance to those threats.
I’ve designed twenty such panels thus far, and the hope was to exhibit them in several communities, both urban and rural, of El Chocó, in order to elicit comments, criticisms and suggestions from the communities themselves. I would then redesign the exhibit in the light of these comments, and perhaps even include some of them in the second version.
The goal here would be to involve the communities in their own representation. The exhibit would travel to carry the story of El Chocó to other parts of Colombia and other countries, and would also be exhibited within El Chocó. I know that there are colleagues who decide to put cameras in the hands of the people they are photographing. I think that is an interesting and useful thing to do, but my project is somewhat different. What I want to do is to put my own photographic and writing skills at the service of the communities, to engage them in a process that produces an exhibit that is the result of an interaction between the communities and me.
Unfortunately, to date we have been unsuccessful in our attempts to raise the money necessary to do this—to produce weather-resistant panels, travel to the communities, re-do the exhibit, and so on. But we’re optimistic. If anyone has any leads for financing such a project, of course, I’d love to hear from you.

Una Muestra Itinerante Interactiva (una propuesta)
Creía que les tendría interés un proyecto fotográfico que he venido elaborando, consultando con unos colegas colombian@s, sobre El Chocó. La idea es crear una serie de paneles de imágenes con un poco de texto sobre el medio ambiente maravillosos de la zona, las culturas especiales alimentadas por ese contorno, las amenazas a ambos, y la resistencia a esas amenazas.
Hasta el momento, he diseñado veinte paneles semejantes, y lo que se pretendía fue exponerlos en varias comunidades, tanto urbanas como rurales, del Chocó. Una meta sería sacar de la gente comentarios, criticas, sugerencias. Luego, volvería a diseñar la muestra en la luz de tales comentarios, e incluso posiblemente incluir unos de ellos en la segunda versión.
La meta acá sería involcrar a las comunidades en su propia representación. La muestra viajaría para llevar la historia del Chocó a otros lados de Colombia y a otros países, y sería expuesta también dentro del Chocó. Sé que hay colegas que deciden poner cámaras en las manos de la gente a quién sacan fotos. Lo veo como una actividad interestante y útil, pero mi proyecto es algo distinto. Lo que pretendo hacer es poner mis habilidades fotográficas y de escritura al servicio de la comunidad, quisiera involucrarl@s en un proceso que produzca una muestra que es resultado de un intercambio entre las comunidades y yo.
Lastimosamente, hasta este punto no hemos tenido ningún éxito en los esfuerzos para recaudar los fondos necesarios para hacer todo esto—elaborar paneles resistentes al intemperie, viajar a las comunidades, volver a elaborar la muestra, etc. Pero seguimos optimistas. Si hay alguien que tiene contactos para financiar semejante proyecto, desde luego me encantaría escuchar de Uds.
